Obituary of Laura Elizabeth Murphy
Murphy (Perry), Laura “Betty” Elizabeth - Halifax
With great sadness the family of Laura “Betty” Murphy (nee Perry) announce her passing at the age of 81 after a brief Illness on Saturday, September 2nd, 2023, at the QEII Hospital. Betty was the daughter of the late Herbert &Loretta Perry, born in Halifax where she grew up and met her husband Thomas “Tom” Murphy, they were married for 63 years and welcomed two daughters, Darlene & Wanda (Shawn) Burke. They were blessed with four grandchildren (Loretta, Wanda, Liam & Kaitlyn), six great-grandchildren (Jaxson, Ben, Logan, Addison & Summer) and survived by siblings Bertha Lawrence and Victor Perry.
Betty worked over the years at the Coomb’s Restaurant, The Met, Sears, and Tim Hortons where the customers would bring her pins from their travels, which she would proudly display on her hat.
Once the grandchildren arrived, she stayed home to take care of them.
She also enjoyed playing Bingo and was often heard yelling Bingo at the Spryfield Legion or at home playing TV Bingo. Another one of her pastimes was knitting blankets and dish cloths for special occasions or volunteering at CNIB/CCB Club.
Betty was predeceased by her loving husband Tom, her parents Herbert & Loretta, siblings Art, Muriel, Irene, and great-granddaughter Karalynn.
The family would like to thank all the Nurses & Doctors at the Palliative Care Unit at the QEII Health Sciences Centre for taking care of our mom.
Arrangements and Cremation have taken place under the care of J. Albert Walker Funeral Home, 149 Herring Cove Road, Halifax.
In keeping with Betty’s wishes, a visitation will be held at J. Albert Walker Funeral Home, on Friday, September 8, 2023 from 6 – 7 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting donations be made in memory to Canadian Cancer Society or a charity of your choice.
