I only saw him a few times but he was a fascinating gentleman to have a conversation with and I did see some of his TV work over time which will always be there. My deepest sympathies to the big MacDonald family. May your memories sustain you during this difficult time. Keeping him and all of you in my prayers.

Sending our sincere condolences to Dan’s family and friends. I am a cousin of Nancy’s and our family was always well aware of the deep devotion he had to her. Dan had such a ‘presence’ about him and when he spoke at an uncles funeral last year he held the complete attention of the congregation as if he were on stage. That voice! It’s comforting to think they’re now finally reunited again.

I worked with Dan in stage, tv and radio. I also served with him on Canadian Actors Equity Council and Actra and saw his tenacious fight for the rights of Canadian artists throughout his career. He always spoke with a sparkling eye about Nancy and Pictou county. As a Newfoundlander myself, I always totally got that loyalty to region. His efforts on behalf of other actors left a real legacy. Thank you Dan….you took the high road when often it was easier to take the low road.

To the Family of Dan MacDonald.
Please accept my deepest sympathy and heartfelt condolences on his passing.
I was a very young actor years ago and was in a number of CBC Radio Plays with him directed those days by Elizabeth Fox and Don Allison here in Halifax at the old CBC building on Sackville Street.
He was very good to work with, a very talented actor, who I never forgot, after he went back to Toronto.
I remember seeing him after that in a number of CBC tv dramas and other films. I was very proud to have worked with him.
The late Joseph Rutten , who Dan knew as well, was another very good local actor who worked with Dan n I, those days, and they were the highest calibre of extremely talented actors here in NS, who I was fortunate enough to be in those radio plays with, whom I learned so much from.
Dan always stood out, because he was so good and real as the character he was playing, and he had such a sonorous voice and great sense of humour!
It certainly was a great pleasure working with him, as well as a learning experience.
I just wanted to tell you how much I admired him and when I saw the obituary this am, I knew I had to write to you about my experiences with him years ago ,and how much of an impression he made on me and many others I am sure.
May God Love Him as much as you all did ,and May The Lord Bless You All in your hour of sorrow.
Sincerely,
G Franklyn Hiscock.
Halifax.

Dear Friends and family. My name is Chris Carless. I am Nancy Macdonald’s cousin and have known Dan for all of my life. Today, his obituary popped up on my phone courtesy of another kindly cousin. I was shocked and also saddened even though I had known about his declining health. Dan was a real part of our lives. We spent many happy hours visiting with Nancy and himself both within Nova Scotia but also in Toronto. Dan was someone to watch, a real actor! He was a good host, kind and sometimes gruff. He told good stories and loved to talk about things that matter. I admired his ship paintings and was happy to gift him a painting of his beloved ‘scully dog” He was terrifically kind when it came time for my father to pass. He showed up for me in a time when I was feeling very low. He spoke well, and captured the funny contrary nature of the man I had loved and lost. The last time we saw him, he was standing in his suit in the warm September sun. He got in his big white car and drove happily down the highway. In my imagination he is driving now with his dear Nancy down some sunlit shore. Perhaps Scully is snoozing in the backseat. We remember them and send our love. Chris and Anna.

Dan dearly loved Pictou. He was surrounded by forever friends when he was guest speaker at a local event. His heart belonged to his home town and Pictou Academy. His letters to the editor of the Advocate shared his opinions and knowledge of Pictou’s past.

I first met Dan when I was a student at the Mount and he at Saint Mary's, and we remained friends through the years, as he married my college friend Nancy and I married Jock Murray, whose back yard bordered on Dan's in Pictou. He was a great friend and a fine actor - we shared the stage in My Three Angels at SMU in 1956 - and we will miss him.
