Dear Pat and Family
On behalf of the Halifax Atlantic Liberal Association and our Executive Board I want to send along our condolences.
Gary had been a dedicated President of our Association and continued to be a staunch Liberal member following his term.
We appreciated his leadership, sense of humor, and ongoing contribution to the constituency of Halifax Atlantic.
We followed Gary's illness with great concern and are saddened when we learned he had passed.
Patti Conrad on behalf of "HALA"....

Our memories of Gary go way back to our youth. We had many fun times together and growing up in Truro. He was a close friend and companion. Gary was with Roddie in 1959 when they were in a major car accident in Maine. Not a fond memory but one never forgotten. We went to Mt A together where he made a lot of friends. He made friends easily. He was a good student. We always remember so many good times. Our sympathies to Pat and all the family.

Simply put, I will miss Gary. It isn’t enough to say ‘miss’. He will be looked for forever in all the familiar places of my memory and in cherished rooms where he was often found, and being there filled with his quiet presence.
He was a man of great intellect. He had many opinions, well expressed, yet never forced upon others. He was always happy to listen and debate, seeming more curious about his interlocutor’s beliefs than the argument itself. His wisdom could be trusted to sooth in times of great distress – like when my father, his brother, was sick in hospital and I called distraught. He was generous with his time, his genial hospitality, and his extraordinary talent in the kitchen and with the barbeque. My husband Jeff and I have repeatedly marvelled at how everything he cooked was the best we had ever had – and was not reproduceable by ourselves no matter how many hints and tips he gave us.
His good humour not only made us laugh but also served him well when confronted with the baffling and often exasperating beliefs and behaviours of others. It always impressed me that he could call someone out for their actions and tell them what he thought and yet do it in a way that made it clear he had no ill feeling. He was a student of human behaviour and I was always happy to hear his observations; they reliably made me laugh, the adage being ‘it’s funny because it’s true’.
I am grateful for Pat and for Katie, Martha and Duncan and for all of the times we have had together and will again – times, I am sure, when Gary will be looked for and his spirit remembered.

I loved my uncle Gary so much. As a child I viewed all of my Dad's brothers as second fathers, men I could always count on for their unconditional love and guidance.
I remember visiting Gary at the Port Authority and looking out over Halifax Harbor from his office being very proud. He was such an accomplished and intelligent man, and most importantly he was a good kind loving man.
I am so sorry for his loss and send all of you my biggest hug.
May he rest in peace.

I first met Gary in the late 1970's - '77 or '78. He had just purchased my Great Aunt's former home in Herring Cove. A beautiful property, facing south, overlooking picturesque Herring Cove. I was just a kid, maybe 16-years-old, and Gary was at least 20 years my senior.
What immediately impressed me about Gary is that he treated me as an equal, which I was not. He was the Executive Director of the Halifax Port Commission and I was a teenager starting High School. He was new to Herring Cove and my family has been there since the 1820's. Gary was keenly interested in Herring Cove. We would have long conversations about the fishing industry, sailing, navigation, the types of fishing practiced in Herring Cove etc.
Gary had a way of making a person feel important. He paid keen attention and asked interesting questions. I was learning art and music and I will always remember his compliments and encouragement, which I know made me want to do better.
I remember being so impressed with the renovations on his new home. I remember him telling me that he and his brother did a lot of that kind of work for themselves. He added a beautiful wooden beam in the living room, among other things.
Gary made friends with many, many people in the Cove, young and old alike. He was well-liked in the community. He cared deeply about it and was always ready to speak out and defend when something was amiss.
When I attended NSCAD in downtown Halifax, Gary was still the Director of the Port Commission and we would bump into each other in Scotia Square occasionally. I remember thinking he was the coolest person I knew and I certainly felt influenced by his charisma and strength of character. Gary was fun to talk to and fun to be around.
He started his software business before there was a thing called desktop publishing. He had foresight. Back then, there was just IBM word-processors... no Apple Computers!... no Windows!
Don't rest In peace dear brother, soar with the angels instead, you are in a much more beautiful place now. Thank you for your friendship and the beautiful family you left with us.
Sincere, heartfelt condolences to Pat and family,
-Matt Dempsey

Well done Michael.
Pat Martha and family Gary was such a kind gentle soul. I was privileged to have met him and been part of his family. His beautiful blue eyes resonate mannerism. Nothing fake about him. You did right and continue to do so, with your husband/father to the very end.
My heart is heavy as I grieve the loss of a wonderful man from your lives.
As my mother told you Martha "you are brave".xoxo
