Obituary of Mary P. Melvin

Age 64, Halifax, passed away on December 27th, 2016 at Northwood Center in Halifax. Born 28 June 1952, she was a daughter of the late Bill and Margaret (Connolly) Melvin. Mary learned to knit at a young age and no matter where she was her knitting needles were not far away. She spent many days training for the Special Olympics in Halifax, where she came in second place for running. Mary worked at Prescott Street Adult Workshop for many years before moving to Northwood. As a young girl Mary travelled to Lourdes in France on a pilgrimage, but she was most happy spending enjoyable days at family get-togethers. Mary loved to spend time with her family, and dancing was her passion. The only way to get Mary off the dance floor was to turn off the music. We believe there are no wheelchairs in heaven so dance on sister, dance on. Mary was born with Downs Syndrome, and the 12th child in the family. She was loved and cared for by everyone, and gave the best hugs. She is survived by her brothers, Frank "Alex", Billy (Sylvia), Joe (Donna), James, Pat (Debbie), David (Marg), George, and Stephen (Kathy); her sisters, Joan Mills, Shirley (Gary McMartin), Margaret Roy, Paula (Kevin Lawlor), Debbie (Stephen Beaver) and Darlene (David Finch); many nieces, nephews and other relatives. She was predeceased by her parents, Marg and Bill Melvin; her brothers, Edward, Wayne and Bernard (Tony) Melvin; her brother in law, Tom Mills; her sisters-in-law, May, Gail and Louise; three nephews, Robert "Bobbie" Melvin, Brian and Douglas Finch. A special thank you to the staff on 7 center, Northwood her "other" loving family. Cremation has taken place under the care of J. |Albert Walker Funeral Home (2005) Ltd. A Service of Remembrance and interment will be held at a later date. No flowers at the family request, memorial donations may be made to the IWK Nic Unit or a charity of your choice.
