I first met Dr. Dorothy Moore at the Canadian Schools of Social Work conference and meetings. She was an impressive force within the Women’s Caucus standing up for women’s rights at a pivotal time in social work education. The group of women, including Dr. Moore, from the Maritime School of Social Work had a rememberable presence as they welcomed and supported young female academics to this critically important caucus. At the time, I had just begun teaching at St. Thomas University.

I just heard from a fellow social worker that Dr Dorothy Moore passed a couple of weeks ago. I was sorry to hear this news and sorry that I had not maintained contact. Dr. Moore was one of my Professors at the Dalhousie School of Social Work, and I found her teaching about structural oppression and racism to be transformative. She was a founding member of the Minorities Task Force at the SSW and her early interventions led to many changes at the School. I always felt supported by her and her teaching has inspired me throughout my career. She served as my local supervisor when I started my PhD as a joint location student at the University of Sheffield. Her early interventions on Affirmative Action at the SSW have had lasting impacts. Her legacy lives on in the many lives she touched. I offer sincere condolences from my family and I, and on behalf of many social workers who were transformed by her teaching. Cathryn thank you for being such a wonderful daughter. I recall meeting you many years ago. My thoughts and prayers are with you and Robert as you grieve the loss of your dear Mom/Mother-in-law. I want to extend my condolences to Catherine and family, and especially I want say that Dorothy More influenced many generations of social workers to be more aware of the extreme marginalization of members of indigenous and Black communities. As my professor of social work in the late 70’s she challenged myself and my fellow students to engage in social justice movements and to be aware of the role we could/should play in confronting racism, sexism and all forms of oppression. One of the greatest privileges of my life was to inherit the course Dorothy developed at the Maritime School of Social Work regarding social change and social movements. I regret that I loss contact with Dorothy after I was elected to the NS Legislature, as the busy life of a constituency orientated MLA took so much of my time and attention, But I never forgot her teaching and I am profoundly grateful for having had her as a professor.

Dear Cathryn, My deepest sympathy to you, and Rob, on the passing of your beloved mother, Dorothy. I always looked forward to our chats at the Nova Scotia Welsh Club Meetings on so many fascinating topics, including several mutual experiences of our earlier upbringing and post-war life in the UK. I got to know Dorothy after we had each retired from fields connected with education — giving us lots to discuss, and to agree on, for the most part. My late husband, Bob, and I were agreed that Dorothy always “had a mind of her own” and Bob, being a fellow ‘Sassenach’, as I named them, (and whose own mother had been named Dorothy) found a special bond with your dear mother. With my most sincere condolences on this very sad loss in your daily life of your always treasured Dorothy, Fay (Lee)

Thanks ever so much, Fay, for your warm comments, which delightfully recalled your and Bob's lovely relationship with my mother. She most enjoyed the Society get-togethers when she had the opportunity to converse with you about your shared topics and interests!

As a retired general practitioner I always take note of the obituaries of women older than myself who have the title Doctor. I often find them to be old professors or colleagues. In this instance I only regret that I did not know this remarkable, resilient and inspiring human being.

Thanks so much for your thoughtful comments. I had forgotten to include her Ph.D from Boston U. which was so important to her, as not many women of her age accomplished this, and she was a feminist in every sense of the word, long before the movement had a name.
