We just heard this week and we were saddened to hear that Mr. Boyle had passed. He was one of our favourite teachers. He held us to a high standard, with his exceptional math knowledge, but shared his sense of humor with us all, which kept it fun and engaging. Our condolences to the family in your loss.

I was very sorry to hear of Mr Boyle’s passing and have the fondest memories and respect for him. I attended Halifax West High School in the 1980’s and had the great fortune of being in his math class. He had an infectious love for mathematics and a talent for pushing students to achieve more than they realized. He was egalitarian and encouraged men and women equally in math. I still remember one of his common phrases that I have kept in mind (and used with my own children): “There is no use crying over math! Math does not care; use the time to try to calmly learn how to do it.”

Russ Boyle - a legend. He was a smart, insightful, honest, forthright, dry person. Whatever he tackled, he championed it. From math to bridge to basketball, Russ did so well. Will miss him forever. Peace...

My heartfelt condolences to Cathy and the entire Boyle family. My memories of Mr. Boyle are vivid and cherished, beginning with the days he officiated my games at Dalhousie. His encouragement was instrumental in reigniting my passion for officiating, and I am forever grateful for his support, especially as I worked alongside him and Calvin Headley to mentor young Matt as he began his journey as an official at just 14.
Matt's frequent reminders of playing with my nephews in Digby, where my brother served as a pastor, always brought a smile. Those were days filled with camaraderie, and stories of fishing adventures in the bay and along the Fundy coast were shared often. I’m sure you remember those times well. Along with Louis Dixon and Calvin (Snake), we built memories that will last a lifetime.
Mr. Boyle’s love for Crib was legendary, and it was the perfect prelude to our many conversations. Yet, what I remember most is the unwavering respect he showed to all officials and his deep passion for ensuring fairness and integrity in the game. That's why I held him in such high esteem, even when he was trying to be "cool."
His passing leaves a void, but the memories will linger, and I take comfort in knowing that one day, we’ll all reunite, free from the politics of the game, in a place where only the love of sport and friendship will remain.
Blessings and condolences to the family and friends. I deeply miss our conversations, and I miss Boyle even more.
With sympathy,
KMF

So sorry to hear of Russell’s passing - I will remember picking high bush blueberries with him (and him telling me to stop eating more than I put in the container ha!) and times at the cottage - thanksgiving dinners at the beautiful house on the water - he was a force to be reckoned with and it’s hard to think that spark is gone x Karen

So sorry to hear about Russ' passing. I still fondly remember working with him at Grammar. Just recently I was laughing too myself at the memory of him and I arguing about the math exam while the third teacher just sat there in the middle not sure what to do! That happened for many years. And then there was his wads of money he carried around in his pocket from officiating. I always told him yay if I was going to mug someone it would be him! He had a passion for everything he did and it showed. That's why he made an impact on his students.

Very sorry that I will be unable to be present at Russel's funeral service this afternoon, but I am pleased to have this opportunity to express my condolences to Cathy and the family, and to his many friends and former colleagues who will be there. I have known, liked and respected Russ every since I first met him when he was a student at St. Pat's High. I especially respected him during his many years as a very imaginative and effective mathematics teacher at Halifax West High School who had a hugely positive impact on so many young men and women who were fortunate to be in one of his classes. He was undoubtedly one of the finest math teachers in the whole city of Halifax, but also one of the best colleagues and friends to his fellow teachers, especially during free periods in our staff room when his quick wit could have full play. And he wasn't only a math teacher. In his early years of teaching he also was a beloved teacher of English literature. I remember also that he was a natural athlete who excelled at any sport that required quickness of mind and movement, skills that I regretfully failed to notice when he first tried out for the football team I was coaching at St. Pat's High. No matter, as he made a huge contribution to youth basketball in the years that followed.

My deepest condolences and sympathies to the family of Russ. I first met Russ when I was coaching and when our boys were playing basketball together we discussed me getting into refereeing. He helped me by talking about the game and by assigning me to experienced refs. He will be missed, white socks and all!

We are sending you and the family our deepest condolences. I have lots of great memories of babysitting for you and Russ. We were always checking out your great record collection. I remember stacking wood for you and I also remember playing croquet in your front yard. You guys always were great to have us kids over.
As the years went by, and we had our own children we would often see Russ on the basketball court. He would keep us up-to-date on what everyone was doing. He also would give my boys some tips on how to play ball. He had this way about him that always made you want to do better.
I hope he is in place now where he has no more pain. Sending you love and prayers to help you through this difficult journey.

I lived across the street from you (Twila Martin), aside from babysitting your children, my fondest memories were picking cranberries and helping to stack your fire wood. Russ always rewarded us with something fun to do, like the go cart track.❤️

To the Family,
Please accept my sincere condolences.
When I saw the obituary this morning, so many memories flooded back. "Mr. Boyle" was my grade 11 Honours Math teacher at HWHS. There are so many stories from in class. He was a phenomenal teacher challenging us to think. You never wanted to see GA (Gross assumption) on a proof. Outside of class, I hung out in his classroom at lunchtime. I never mastered the intricacies of Bridge but I played many a hand of Hearts with like-minded students. I don't think any of us ever noticed a gruff exterior. He was always a friend and mentor. May your cherished memories bring you comfort now and moving forward.
May God's love surround you all and grant you some peace at this difficult time. I will keep you all in my prayers.
With sympathy,
Donna Goyetche

Growing up, my Dad had a very firm rule that there were to be “NO phone calls during dinner!”. A rule that was quickly broken when BOYLE,R. appeared on the caller ID. Russ would often call over the dinner hour to discuss “a basketball assignment” (no doubt because that was the only time both he and Dad would be free to chat between school and basketball games). He and Dad would immediately begin their daily discussion about all the comings and goings in the basketball community. This was much to our chagrin, particularly as teens, because we weren’t allowed to talk to OUR friends during dinner. And as far as friends go, Russ was one of the best. He was always a fervent, loyal supporter of my Dad both as a person and as an official. As much as they supported one other, Dad and Russ pushed and challenged each other, and both were exceptional referees as a result. Dad loved to tease Russ, and our house would fill with Dad’s laughter when Russ would undoubtably respond with his dry wit. I grew up alongside Matt, often commiserating about how deeply unfair it was to grow up in the basketball community with our dads refereeing (Hard to make too many friends when your Dad is “Technical Teddy”). We certainly never got to complain about any officiating. Russ was so proud of Matt as a player – he would have a twinkle in his eye whenever he watched him play or talked about his accomplishments – and equally proud of Matt’s success as a referee. I watched Matt referee a few years ago and know Russ’ legacy will live on with him on that court as it does with our family whenever we share a knowing smile if a phone rings during dinner. Our hearts and thoughts are with the Boyle family and with all of those who loved him.
