Obituary of Dan Somers

SOMER, Daniel “Dan” – Age 74, It is with hearts filled with sadness that the family of Daniel Somers must announce his passing on December 4th, 2024, just 6 days before his 75th birthday.

Dan was diagnosed with cancer in 2022 and underwent surgery in July of that year for the removal of several tumors and his gall bladder. However true to form he sprang to his feet as soon as possible following this and kept himself as busy as ever.

Dan was raised in the North End of Halifax; he was the second youngest child in a family of eight children from the late James “Jimmy” and Mary (Ferguson) Somers.  He began his schooling at St.  Stephen's Elementary, followed by attending high school at St. Pat's and then a year at St. Mary's University.

Following University he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Navy. Upon leaving the Navy he started a career in sales for the heating industry, working for several major companies and ending his career with many years of service with Super-line Fuels.   He was well-loved and respected by employers, employees, and customers alike.

Dan was a jack of all trades much like his father before him.  When Dan was not working, he spent a lot of time fixing things in his shed and gracing the rivers of Antigonish, where like his father he seemed to have a special way of always catching the biggest fish of the trip.  "Uncle Dan" as the nephews called him was a true angler.  A ritualistic pastime that runs deep in the Somers Family.

Dan had a deep bond with his best friend and Brother Pat. Every Friday for many years they would adventure together visiting their favorite spots “tire kicking” as they called it with another very special friend Darcy Canning. They were well known for their travels and were seen as "three fun amigos".

Left to mourn is his life, his companion, Gloria whom he spent many happy years. Also left to mourn his brothers, Jim (Jan) Somers, and Patrick (Fran) Somers. Also, an extended family of cousins, nieces, nephews, great nieces, and nephews.  He was predeceased by sisters, Audrey Giffin, Patricia (Roger) Blais, and Lois (Ron) Knoll; brothers, Kevin (Mary) Somers, and Jack (Shirley) Somers

Arrangements and cremation have been entrusted to J. Albert Walker Funeral Home, Halifax.  In keeping with Dan’s wishes, there will be no visitation or funeral service held.
