Obituary of Gerald Joseph Cooper
It is with sad hearts that we announce the passing of our brother and uncle, Gerald Joseph Cooper, peacefully on April 7, 2017 at the Halifax Infirmary QEII at the age of 73. Born in Halifax in 1943, he was the son of the late Lawrence Alphonse of Truro and Margaret Hudson (Sturgess) Cooper of New Haven, Nova Scotia.
Gerald was a proud member of the Royal Canadian Horse Artillery serving 26 years from 1967 until his retirement in 1993 from his home base CFB Petawawa with the rank of Master Warrant Officer. During his career, Gerald served two tours in Germany and two in Cyprus. He spoke fondly of his time in the service, especially the years he spent in Germany. Gerald was also very dedicated to his family and loved spending time with them. He loved family gatherings, card games, going for walks with his dog Gunner and enjoyed watching many sports.
Gerald will be greatly missed by his brothers, Raymond, Joseph (Stella) and Paul (Carol); sisters, Ethel Craig, Kathy (Ron) Clark and Nancy; many nieces and nephews and great & great great nieces and nephews. He is predeceased by his parents; sisters, Joan, Shirley (Burgess) and Barbara (Gracie); brother Lawrence; nephews Jamie (Burgess) and Lawrence (Cooper).
Cremation has taken place and arrangements are under the care of J. Albert Walker Funeral Home 149 Herring Cove Rd. Where a visitation will be held on Thursday, April 13, from 2-4 and 7-9 pm. In keeping with Gerald`s wishes, there will be no service. A family celebration of life will be held at a later date.
The family would like to thank the nurses, doctors & staff of the fourth floor of the Dartmouth General and the sixth floor of the QEII in Halifax for their care and support during his stay. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to either Bide Awhile or the Canadian Liver Foundation.
