Obituary of Donald Joseph Landry
86 – Halifax, passed away peacefully at home on February 20, 2018.
Don was a man of substance who lived by the courage of his convictions. His lifelong commitment to social justice led him to work and live in communities ranging from fishing villages in Newfoundland and PEI, to health co-operatives in the Philippines, and a reserve in northern Manitoba. He was a proud Korean War Veteran and an active participant in the regimental association of the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry. Until his last days, he soldiered on as a particularly passionate board member for the Veterans' Memorial Medical Centre Society. He lovingly supported his children and grandchildren who will remember the way that, through his storytelling, he challenged them, and all of us, to extend our sense of responsibility for each other and the world. He was a mentor, a leader, and a friend.
He is survived by his children, Denise Landry, Michelle Payne (Carl), David Landry (Margaret), Brenda Landry, Kevin Landry, Neil Landry (Beckey), and Paul Landry (Trudie); grandchildren, Jacob (Sally), Jessica, Claire, Matthew (Amanda), Andrew, Nickey (Lee), Alex, Patrick, Jack, Ted, Kathryn, Julia, William, Kate; great-grandchildren, Sawyer, Chris, Aeisha, Declan, Darwin, Coraline, Jesse, Camden; sisters, Charlotte, Lois and Paulette (Bill); brothers, Pat, Bob (Anna), and Jack (Louise); sister-in-law, Sister Dorothy (Sisters of Charity); He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Geraldine “Gerry”; parents, Humphrey and Catherine Landry; sister, Ella Catherine; brothers-in-law, William, Robert, Laurie and Brian; sisters-in-law, Bernie, Joan and Joyce.
Arrangements are under the care of J. Albert Walker Funeral Home (2005) Ltd., 149 Herring Cove Road, Halifax, where a Celebration of Don’s life will be held on Friday, February 23 at 1 PM, followed by a reception.
