Obituary of Sidney Hughes

HUGHES, Sidney James - 1929 - 2008, Halifax. Sidney Hughes died at home on Sunday, August 31, 2008, after a courageous battle with cancer. Raised in River Hebert, Sid was the son of the late Alvin and Sarah (McWhirter) Hughes. A graduate of Mount Allison University, Sid also completed postgraduate courses at University of Toronto and the London School of Economics. Sid worked for the Province of Nova Scotia in the field of industrial development for many years. He later moved to the private sector where he served as president of IMO Foods Ltd., Yarmouth, until his retirement. He founded Fancy Foods Ltd., a Halifax-based food distribution company that he continued to manage until his death. Sid was an Elder and member of Parkhill United Church, Halifax ,and a willing volunteer with the Age of Sail Museum in Port Greville. He is survived by his beloved wife of 51 years, Betty Jean (Cromar); daughter, Carolyn (Darrell Pardy), Yarmouth, Me.; sons, Jim (Elizabeth), New Westminster, B.C.; Peter (Viki), Columbus, New Jersey; and John (Krista), Lower Sackville; grandchildren, Christopher and Stephen Pardy, Samantha, Megan, James, William and Sarah Hughes; sister, Irene (Eugene Hardy), Windsor, Ont.; niece, Margaret Hayes, Carlisle, Ont., and many dear relatives. Arrangements are under the direction of J. Albert Walker Funeral Home (2005) Ltd. 149 Herring Cove Rd., Spryfield (477-5601). By request there will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held in St. Augustine's Church, Purcell's Cove Road, at 2 p.m. on Friday, September 5, with burial at a later date in Grace United Church Cemetery, Port Greville. The family is very thankful for the wonderful support services provided by their doctors, the VON, Home Care and palliative care workers.
