Obituary of Joseph Hattie

HATTIE, Joseph Alexander: 73, Halifax, passed away on Wednesday, November 12, 2008 at the New Halifax Infirmary, Halifax, NS, surrounded by his loving family. Born in New Glasgow, he was a son of the late Wilfrid Hattie and Barbara (MacIntosh) Delaney. Throughout his career, Joe had been employed with the Department of Lands and Forests as a Forest Ranger and Cartographer. He was a man who loved nature, fishing and hunting, and was an avid outdoorsman who loved camping with his family in Kejimkujik, canoeing, and teaching his children to swim and all of nature. He had been active with Cubs, Scouts, and Venturers, as well as with “Trees for Canada”. Joe was a very proud family man, who loved his wife, children, and grandchildren dearly. He had been an active member of Bethany United Church. Joe will be fondly remembered as a generous and helpful neighbour, always willing to assist others, and one who cared for animals. He is survived by his loving wife of 43 years, Ruth (Findley), his children, Katherine “Kathy” Hattie, Sudbury, ON, Susan Riehl (Chris), Dartmouth, NS, Beverley “Bev” Hattie, Truro, NS, and Ronald “Ron” Hattie, Phoenix, Arizona, and his brother, Donald (Ruth) Hattie, Sackville, NB. Affectionately known as “Grampie Joe”, he will be sadly missed by his grandchildren, Lachlan, Erin, and Leah, as well as his canine companion, Chloe. Joe was predeceased by his father, Wilfrid, his mother, Barbara Delaney and step-father, John Delaney, as well as a half-sister, Edna Hattie. Resting at J. Albert Walker Funeral Home (2005) Ltd., 149 Herring Cove Road, Halifax, NS, (477.5601), where visitation will be held on Saturday from 6-8 PM. The funeral service will be held on Sunday, November 16, 2008 at 3 PM from Bethany United Church, Joseph Howe Drive, Halifax, NS. A reception will follow in the church hall. A graveside service will take place at a later date.
