Obituary of Arthur Harrigan

Harrigan, Arthur Leonard: 88, Herring Cove, NS, passed away peacefully at his home after a lengthy illness. Born August 16, 1920, in Herring Cove, he was a son of the late Heber and Mary (Nickerson) Harrigan. He attended St. Mary’s College before taking over the family business, “Harrigan Brothers General Store” in Herring Cove until 1974 when the store was sold. He also ran A.L. Harrigan Insurance. Over the years, he was actively involved in St. James’ Anglican Church, Herring Cove and community organizations, including Halifax County School Board, Nova Scotia Amateur Artist’s Association, and Missions to Seamen. He enjoyed painting and photography. He is survived by his long time friend and companion, Angela Arsenault, daughters, Chrystal Gray (Glen), Sambro, and Cindy, Halifax, his son, Leonard (Judy Mansfield), Halifax, grandchildren, Lisa (Alan Forsey), Jason Harrigan, Shawna Gray, and Ryan Gray (Dawn Shepherd), his great-grandchild, Julia Forsey, as well as several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his former wife, Anita, his son, Dale, brother, Erlyn, and sister, Ethel. The family extends a special thanks to the Arsenault Family, Dr. Hugh Matheson, the VON, Northwood Homecare, and Bayshore Homecare for their care and compassion, as well as QEII Palliative Care Unit and Nova Scotia Continuing Care. Cremation has taken place under the care of JA Walker Funeral Home (2005) Ltd., 149 Herring Cove Road, Halifax, NS (477-5601). A graveside service will be held on May 25, 2009 at 11 AM at St. James’ Cemetery, Herring Cove, followed by a reception in St. James’ Church Hall.
