Obituary of George Henneberry

HENNEBERRY, George Walter Sr. — 92, Sambro, passed away peacefully on Saturday, October 17, 2009, in the QEII Health Sciences Centre. His short stay at the QEII was spent with several of his children and grandchildren lovingly at his side. George was a son of the late Will and Sarah (Smith) Henneberry. He is survived by his only daughter, Pauline, Sambro; sons, George, Spryfield; Roger, Sambro; Andy (Wanda), Sambro; Mark (Rhonda), Shelburne; sisters, Bertha, Alice and Kathleen; brother, Billy; 12 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by wives, Florence (Gilkie) and Florence (Mason); sons, Alex, Amos and Robin; sisters, Mary, Phyllis and Ruth; brother, Herbert. George was a seasoned fisherman who fished most of his life. During the Second World War he worked with Foundation Maritime on the tow boat, "Amour". He loved the sea and passed on his passion and skills to several of his sons. He was a strong, yet gentle man who, with the premature passing of his wives retired early and single-handedly successfully raised his four youngest sons to adulthood. After all his children were grown, George was still never an idle man as there was always a project to work on, or a job to be done. He loved to tell stories, sharing his lifetime of experiences with his children, grandchildren or any persons interested, for which there were always many. He was an avid fan of Bob Barker and his game shows, never missing an episode. He kept up-to-date on the daily activities within the fishing industry and faithfully followed local and world news. He maintained his wisdom and insight into his final hours. He will be greatly missed. The family extends their sincere gratitude to the special ladies of Newfoundland who provided home care for the past year. As George put it, their presence made his house feel like a home again. Arrangements are under the care and direction of J. A. Walker Funeral home (2005) Ltd., 149 Herring Cove Road, Halifax, NS (477.5601), where a funeral service will be held on Wednesday, October 21, at 2 p.m. No visitation, by request. Interment to follow in St. James Cemetery, Sambro. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory of George may be made to the IWK Health Centre Foundation.
