Obituary of George West

West Sr., George Albert: 72, (1937-2009), Spryfield, passed away November 3, 2009 at the QEII, surrounded by his loving family. Born and raised in Africville, he was a son of the late Roy Cecil and Lena (Downey) West. He was a member of Cornwallis Street Baptist Church. George was a vibrant spirit who liked to laugh and joke. He would often perform as “Geraldine Jones”, dressing up and entertaining family and friends with his impersonation, a performance only he could master. He was the car mechanic of all times and there was no vehicle he could not repair. He was known to many as the “man on the hill” who was loved and respected. George trained many of his siblings to dance, and had performed with one of his sisters on the TV show “Under 21”. He is survived by his loving daughters, Star Myers, Spryfield, Melanie, Missouri, and Helen, Ontario, his son, Joey, Spryfield, 10 grandchildren, sisters, Rose Campbell (Bernie), Beatrice Wilkins (John), and Mary Gangoo (Gary), brothers, Fred (Melissa), Allan (Heather), both of Halifax, and Perry, Montreal, as well as many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by sons, Shawn and George Jr., granddaughter, BrendaLee Starr Myers, sisters, Elizabeth Jefferies (Carl), Olive May Hamilton (Paul), Shirley Allen, and Marie Loppie (James), brothers, Ernest, Roy (Collette), and Michael, grandparents, Daniel and Elizabeth (Riley) West, Hattie (Flint) Bain, Robert Sasso, and Frances and Simon Downey. The family would like to thank the staff of Melville Lodge for their dedicated care they provided to George, as well as the staff of the QEII Emergency.
