Obituary of David Joseph "Joe" MacDonald

71, of Halifax, loving husband, father, and grandfather, passed away July 23, 2010 in the Halifax Infirmary, QEII. Born in Sydney and raised in New Glasgow, he was a son of the late Sears and Verna (MacDonald) MacDonald. He attended St. John's Academy, New Glasgow, St. Francis Xavier University, Antigonish, and NS Technical College, Halifax, graduating with Electrical Engineering in 1963. He started work with NB Tel in Saint John, then moved to Halifax in 1965, where he was a well-respected instructor at NSIT until his retirement in 1994. Joe was a creative thinker, constantly working on elaborate and time-consuming projects. He had a great sense of humour and truly enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and the Friday night crowd. Some of his many interests were travel, motorcycling, and reading, while his pet peeves were our Nova Scotia weather and politics in general. Joe is survived by loving wife Marie (Belliveau); son Joseph (Irene Tipping), Barbados; daughters Anna Marie MacDonald (Greg Goulden), Halifax, Joanne MacDonald (Greg Cowan) Brockville, ON.; sisters Mina Chamberlain (Paul), Saint John, NB, Marie MacDonald (Gerry), Arisaig, NS, Joanne Noble, Edmonton, AB; grandchildren Amelia, Arianna, Holly, Tim, Eric, Sam, Grace; many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brother Jackie. Cremation has taken place under the care of J.A. Walker Funeral Home (2005) Ltd. 149 Herring Cove Rd. (477-5601) where visitation will be held Monday 2-4 & 7-9 p.m. Funeral service will be Tuesday 11 a.m. from St. Michael’s Roman Catholic Church in Spryfield, with a reception to follow. Interment to take place in Oakridge Memory Garden, Lwr. Sackville. In lieu of flowers, donations in memory may be made to the ALS Society of Nova Scotia. The family thanks Dr. Brenda Joyce, Dr. Tim Benstead, and the team at the Nova Scotia Rehab Centre.
