Anne Dempsey

Obituary of Anne Bernadine Dempsey

Age 81, of Herring Cove, passed away peacefully on February 1st  2020, at Melville Lodge. Born in Halifax, February 12, 1938, she was the daughter of the late Bernard and Pearl (Relf) Orton.

Bernie was first and foremost a wonderful wife and nurturing mother. She also cared deeply for her community as illustrated by her devotion to cooking and organizing church suppers and dances. She was a member of the Herring Cove Fire Department Auxiliary and worked tirelessly to support the Fire Hall. Mom quietly looked in on elderly people to make sure they knew that they were still valued and loved. She is well known for her backyard parties where all ages were welcome and celebrated. Bernie began her working career at the age of 15 and was the clerk of the Public Utilities Board upon retirement. The one word that sums Mom up is kindness; she had a huge heart. Even in Mom’s darkest days as she struggled with Alzheimer’s, her beautiful personality shone through with every smile. She is survived by her husband, Cyril; daughter, Sherry (Steve); sons, Sean (Diane), Cyril (Kathleen), Liam (Katherin), Seamus (Chrissy); grandchildren, Steven, Chris Lesley Field, Brennan, Erin, Conor, Kimberly, Caitlyn, Aiden, Layla and Keira Dempsey; and four great grandchildren. She was predeceased by brother, Harold and sisters, Helen, Pearly, Shirley and her infant daughter, Tina Marie.

Arrangements are under the care of J. Albert Walker Funeral Home (2005) Ltd. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Saturday, February 8th at 11am from St. Paul’s Church, Hebridean Dr., Herring Cove, followed by a reception in St. Paul’s Parish Hall. Interment to take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers donations may be made to a charity of choice.

The family wishes to extend our heartfelt thanks to the professional and caring staff of Melville Lodge.
