I believe I was in the first class "Miss Fry" – as she was and always will be in my memory - ever taught in 1957, grade 1 at Alexander MacKay School in the Northend of Halifax. I was fortunate to have her teach me again in grade 3. It was an all boys, Irish Catholic school and we were more Irish boys than Catholic children. Some of the kids came from pretty rough backgrounds and most teachers ruled with, if not an iron fist, a leather strap. Miss Fry reigned instead. We behaved because she was kind to us. She went out of her way to enrich our experience in many ways. Some very small but thoughtful – allowing us to sit on the floor around her while she read us a favorite story was unheard of in that school and I suspect, uncommon at home for a lot of those kids. She brought in a friend's tape recorder so we could hear our own voices for the first time. There were countless times she taught children, not just subjects She was also very pretty and a first innocent crush for more than a few of us. My condolences to her family.

My deepest condolences to the MacDonald Family. I am a former student of Mrs. MacDonald's grade 8 homeroom class at D.A. Morrison Junior High School in Toronto from 1997-1998. I have often wondered about the woman who put me on the path to who I am today as a person academically, professionally and personally. It all started with her. Her belief and support in her students were unparalleled by any teacher or professor I have had in my life, including my years in undergrad and law school. She made each and every student in that class strive to do better, be kinder and more self-confident. She taught me to acknowledge my abilities and pushed me to a level of academic success that I did not know was possible. That year in her class was the best year of school in my life filled with achievements, friends, and fun. My heart is broken that I was not able to convey this all to her in person; to let her know the profound impact she has had in my life and that 22 years later I still think fondly about her quiet grace and uplifting presence. We are all better for having had her in our lives. - Suchana Das, D.A. Morrison, 97-98

My condolences to the Macdonald family. I am a former student of Mrs. Macdonald. She was my grade 8 homeroom teacher at D.A. Morrison junior high school in 1997-1998 class 82. I met my best friend of 23 years in her class. We have been trying to find Mrs. Macdonald for over a year so we could thank her for the profound positive influence she had had on our lives. We still talk about her as the best teacher ever 22 years later. My year in Mrs. Macdonald's class will always be the most cherished year of my life. Mrs. MacDonald was as beautiful on the inside as she was on the outside. She commanded great respect from everyone. Even the "bad" kids behaved in her class. At the beginning of class when the students were chatting and not settling down, she never raised her voice. She just stood calmly at the front of the room with a slight smile her face until we qhieted down which we did soon enough. She brought out the best in all her students and fostered teamwork. That year our class won every single school contest. My best friend had the highest average in the school, and we had the most number of students with above 90 percent average. She brought out the best in all her students. She thought us about empathy, generosity, kindness, compassion. When a church burnt down in Toronto, she asked the class if we wanted to donate the 200 dollars we had been collecting for a school trip to the church or keep it for our trip. She let us decide. We as a class decided to donate the money. We were then featured on City TV news. A gentleman who owned a fleet of buses saw this on the news and offered to lend a bus to us for the day. We decided to go to Niagara Falls. We ended up going on a class trip in the end! Mrs Macdonald never judged anyone. I recall I was in a fight with one of the students in our science class. When I was returning to homeroom class, all I could think of was how disappointed Mrs. Macdonald would be. I was expecting the worst when I walked in through the door. She asked me to come to her desk and asked what happened. I told her. She smiled and asked me to go back to my seat. I never fought with anyone again. Mrs. Macdonald let us behave like the 13 year old kids that we were. She never expected us to be silent in class while doing work like many other teachers. This allowed us to work together as a team. Thank you Mrs. Macdonald for the best year of my life. You were an amazing human being. Your humanity is unmatched. You were patient, kind, understanding, a good listener. You led by example. The world needs more people like you. I love you and will always think of you. The gates of heaven are ready to receive you. Yours truly, Nahid Alam.

Along with my parents, Nancy was what family in Nova Scotia meant to me. She was a warm welcoming presence at an early age. A visit with cousin Nancy was always a special treat. My wife Anna and I were so grateful to spend many Christmas, Thanksgiving dinners and summer visits with her and Dan. Nancy was the best in filling her table with conversation and wonderful food. She knew all the best family stories and was a terrific historian. Her humor, kindness and generosity were a bright light in our lives for all the years we knew her. We will miss her dearly.

Nancy was a gracious lady with a love of teaching! She also never was shy in expressing her opinion. I remember Nancy telling me about her mother's dislike of housework. She preferred to read a book. So she kept a head scarf, pail and cleaning items in the closet and if someone was coming to the door she got them out and greeted her guest with "oh you just caught me starting to clean". I loved it! She was lovely!
