Obituary of D. Kathy Lewin

It is with complete shock and sadness that the family of Deborah Kathryn (Harris) Lewin announces her very sudden passing on Monday January 23, 2023 in her home.  Kathy was born in Halifax on March 19, 1956 and she was the oldest daughter of Gerald Dennis Nathan Harris and Myrtle Matilda (Blakeney) Harris.  Kathy met and fell in love with the man of her dreams Dale Lewin, marrying him in December 1979.  With Dale being in the Air Force, they enjoyed their lives together spending those first few years posted to Germany, then coming home posted to Greenwood for 5 years and then finally settling in Sackville, NS.  Kathy spent almost 20 years babysitting kids in her home and had the absolute pleasure of caring for so many family’s children as if they were her own.  She enjoyed staying in touch with those families and watching those kids grow and become amazing adults.  Hoping grandchildren weren’t to far on the horizon, Kathy made the hard decision to retire from childcare and move on to new challenges.  After so many years at home Kathy went to work at Tim Hortons – first in the Bedford Place Mall, then Sunnyside Mall and finally Bedford Highway at the bottom of Hammonds Plains Road.  Here Kathy thrived!  She loved her time working at Tim Hortons and all the co-workers who became like family.  Kathy loved her customers and her customers loved her.  She genuinely loved to do whatever she could to help people.  This was clear when she dedicated years taking care of her dad after her mom passed away or making meals for her mother-in-law.  All of these things that she had in her life that she loved so much didn’t come close to the love that she had for her 2 daughters.  Kathy would often be sharing stories of her girls and the pride that she had for both of them was clear for anyone to see.  Kathy was always there to do whatever she could for her girls and was always their biggest cheerleader telling them there was nothing they couldn’t achieve.  We would have said that Kathy was put on this earth to be a mother – but then she became a grandmother and it was clear, that was what she was meant to be.  First came Caleb – the only boy.  He stole her heart the minute she saw him and the bond the two had will always remain.  Whenever Kathy was sad, she wanted a Caleb hug.  6 months after Caleb came Samantha – her ladybug.   We watched as she instantly fell in love again.  Her special bond with Samantha was something unique for them, she identified with Samantha’s shyness, calm nature and was always in awe of her strength and beauty.  Lastly came Nicole and that relationship was unique again.  Nicole kept Kathy young and laughing and they shared a special relationship with a love of ganging up on Grampy for Nerf wars.  In her last days, Kathy did what she did best and that was taking care of her husband Dale.  He struggled with some health issues and no matter what needed to be done, Kathy would make sure it was done.  After 43 years of marriage, they were truly the example of love and they lived each day together.  The family takes comfort that they will be together for eternity as her dear husband Dale also passed away 2 days after.  Heartbreak with a side of lymphoma.  Kathy is survived by her daughters Karie (Chad) Raymond, Vicki (Alain) Veilleux.  Her amazing grandchildren – Caleb Raymond and Samantha and Nicole Veilleux.  Also survived by her siblings James (Margaret) Harris, Lynn (Mark) Flemming, Rick Harris, Cindy (Edward) Oakley and her nieces and nephews – Jeff (Judy) Flemming, Kory Flemming, Michelle Harris, Morgan & Sophia Oakley.  Visitation for Dale and Kathy communally will take place on Monday January 30th from 6:00 – 8:00pm.  At J. Albert Walker Funeral Home and a communal memorial service will be held on Tuesday January 31st at 11AM, also at J. Albert Walker Funeral Home, 149 Herring Cove Road, Halifax, Nova Scotia. Following the service there will be a reception.  For those unable to attend in person, there will be the option to join via livestreaming:
