I was a close neighbour of Joan and her family when we were children. I remember helping my father jack up their house and putting a foundation under it. I was 1 year older, but never had the privilege of knowing her well because we went to different schools. I am so glad to hear that she led a full and rewarding life, one that her family must be very proud of. Terry Horne

Dear Bob and Darcy You are not alone in mourning the loss of this fine woman. I was privileged to work with her on a number of projects. When the atmosphere around the table grew tense Joan contributed her intelligence, balance and humor to the group. May her memory be a blessing ... Joyce Halpern

Bob and family,
I had the honour and joy to work with Joan for many years as the lawyer for MFCS. I looked forward to every meeting with her. Joan always showed the gentle patient wisdom that drew people to her. Joan made those around her better. She taught in subtle ways so that you never really know you were being taught until later. She was most importantly a good and selfless person who thought first of others and of her community. May her memory be blessing.

I would like to extend my condolences to her family and her community on Joan's recent passing. I had the opportunity and privilege to work with Joan for many years - from the time of its development - which was very largely attributable to her intense efforts -thru many operational years of the Mi'Kmaq Family and Children's Services. She was a leader and ahead of her times in getting this agency off the ground, operating and fully deserves our respect.

Dear Bob and Darcy. My sincere sympathies to you and all the family on the passing of Joan. She was a remarkable person full of kindness, energy and always fun. I first met Joan when we volunteered at a camp for children in Chezzencook. We then were classmates in our MSW program at Dal. Over the years our paths crossed through working with children and youth and we served on the 1st Social Work Board of Examiners. Joan was an official at many swim meets for youth and our son was a swimmer. She could always be counted on for her dedication to families. Joan was a remarkable person who was delightful to meet. Rest in peace. Linda

I was saddened to learn of Joan’s death. She was such a trailblazer to her Community and taught me so much with her kindness and compassion. Joan’s direction and guidance during my years as the Co-ordinator of the Micmac BSW Program at Dal were immeasurable. She was always a phone call away for any help or guidance and nothing was ever a problem for Joan. She so calmly handled everything in her path. When I think of the strength of Mi’kmaq women Joan comes to mind. I was truly blessed to call her friend during the years we worked together.RIP Joan.

I was so sorry to read of Joan’s passing this morning. When I was a young girl my family lived in a flat over Joan’s mother and Mary in a house owned by Mrs Glode. Joan and Ann visited their mother often and I’ll never forget Joan’s kindness toward me. I have a fond memory of her taking me for a ride on the back of her motorcycle. It was quite a thrill for a ten year old girl. I can still see her with black curls sticking out under her helmet, goggles on, and a black leather jacket. She was fearless! Joan left an impression on me that day. Her joy, her courage, her spontaneity, and her kindness have stayed with me. I know those of you who know Joan so well will miss her terribly. My wish for you is that you get some comfort in knowing her legacy lives on in the lives of so many people. I am very glad that I had the privilege of sharing her space for the time that I did. Joan was a special lady. Please accept my condolences. I am so sorry for your loss.
