I knew Sam from working with him in the Residence Department as a student (and then graduated) employee for many years. He had a gruff and grumpy exterior, but once you broke through that, he was a kind-hearted and funny man. I remember hanging out in the key shop just chatting with him. Whenever I dropped in to SMU, I would look for him. He will be missed. My condolences to his family.

I knew Sam for some years, beginning at Saint Mary's, and later from many seasons on the softball diamond. Our lives took different paths, but I have fond memories of Sam's booming laugh, his enthusiasm for a game of any kind, his unfailing generosity, and his gentle soul, which he could never quite hide.
Our condolences to Sam's family and loved ones.
Rest in Peace, old friend.

For many years Donna & I would play "elves" to Sam's Santa during our annual Saint Mary's Christmas Dinner. Sam always visited every guest while we dutifully followed him around for what seemed like hours.
He was a kind, gentle man; although he tried to be gruff, he never really succeeded!
My sympathies to his family, God rest his soul,

Vera and family,
I am so sorry for your loss of such a gentle and kind hearted giant of a man.
I first met Sam during our first year at SMU in 1977 as we shared the the 4th suite on the 6th floor and to say he was bigger than life was an understatement. From far too many trips to the Midtown Tavern, to playing games of hockey in the 6th floor hallway using taped curling brooms to many good times eating pizza from Peter's Pizzeria, these are but some of the great memories I will always have of Sam. We kept in contact after SMU, and for almost 34 years (except Covid) we would get together in Halifax and relive old times. I am a better person for knowing Sam and will miss him dearly.

Vera and family,
So sad to hear of Sam's passing. Dave and I have many great memories to look back on. Sam and Dave were roommates in the late 80's and later Sam was "Santa Sam" to our children and the rest of our neighborhood. (I have included a photo) He was always up for guys lunch at the Midtown Tavern. A great friend. He will be missed. Our condolences from Roxane and Dave Peters
