Obituary of Ronald Joseph Fitzgerald

FITZGERALD, Ronald (Ron) Joseph- Age 80 of Halifax passed away peacefully on September 18, 2024, surrounded by his family. Born in Antigonish to Ambrose Peter Fitzgerald and Mary Loretta (McLeod) Fitzgerald, Ron spent his early childhood in Guysborough before moving to Halifax, where he grew up on Oxford Street. He leaves behind his loving partner Terry, his sons Joe and Matt (Shalini), granddaughter Dhara, brothers Jim (Lucille) and Peter (Marlene), sisters Cath (Gary d.), Jane (Nelson), and Anne Marie, and extended family.

Music was at the center of Ron’s life and his way of connecting with others. After learning to play piano by ear as a boy in the family home, Ron showcased his natural talent in high school and university bands, then went on to accompany many great local musicians throughout his life. He especially loved to play music with his partner Terry, son Matt, brother Pete, brother-in-law Gary, and granddaughter Dhara. Ron earned a degree from the Berklee School of Music in Boston and was a regular volunteer at the Halifax Jazz Festival. He spent the last decade playing gigs with his band Runaway and his brother Pete—including many performances at local seniors venues.

Ron worked for 30 years as a teacher and vice principal at Halifax West High School, where his quiet demeanor and commitment to education made a lasting impact on students and colleagues alike. He was a champion of the underdog, advocating for people and communities less fortunate. Ron encouraged struggling students by saying, “All you need is one good year.” This personal maxim opened many eyes to once-hidden possibilities and provided hope and inspiration for those who felt chained to their past. After retiring, he worked as a tour guide, continuing his love of sharing knowledge—especially about local history and current events.

Ron acquired a love of fly fishing from his father, which he shared with his son Joe and brother Jim on many adventures. He found profound meaning in the mythic lore of the East Coast’s waterways, from its mighty storied salmon rivers to its secret trickling trout streams. He also loved sports and was an avid runner, golfer, and tennis player in his earlier years. Ron was once head coach of the Halifax West men’s hockey team—leading them to a championship season—and continued to skate regularly until very recently. Later in life, he became an avid Toronto Blue Jays fan, with dreams of visiting Rogers Centre for a game and a loonie dog.

Ron was also a student of history and poetry, and would often quote historical figures and recite classic odes by heart. His deep understanding of our past propelled a keen interest in current events, as he loved to engage in spirited debate on the day’s important issues.

However, Ron was most in his element tickling the ivories at family gatherings, stomping his foot, and belting out brazen lyrics. He was a naturally quiet man, but in the presence of his family and friends, he expressed himself with a powerful voice, quick wit, and a wry sense of humor. Sitting at the piano and filling the room with melodies, songs, and poems, he never failed to create special moments that will be cherished by all who were witness. He will leave a tremendous void in the worlds of those who knew him.

The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the kind and caring staff at the Camp Hill Veterans Memorial Hospital, whose compassion and dedication provided incredible comfort and support during Ron’s final days.

Ron’s memory will be carried forward and honored at a private family ceremony in Guysborough County.
