Obituary of John Bartlett
BARLETT, John Gerard Age 63 of Halifax. It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of John Gerald Bartlett on December 12, 2024, at the QEII Halifax Infirmary, after years of battling with health issues.
John was born in Grand Falls, Newfoundland and Labrador in 1961 and raised in Labrador City, Newfoundland and Labrador. He joined the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF), Army, Armoured Corps at the age of 17 (1979) and did two tours in Germany from 1981-1983 and 1987-1992 and one deployment in Bosnia for six months in 1997.
John had unwavering love and commitment to his wife, two daughters, and two grandchildren. These individuals were his everything; he loved them more than life itself. John met Kay in Cornwallis, Nova Scotia in 1983 and the two began dating in January 1987. Kay was born in Salmon Cove, Newfoundland and Labrador in 1963 and joined the Canadian Armed Forces, Army, as a Medical Assistant in 1981 at the age of 17. They married in Lahr, Germany on November 25th, 1988. John received a medical discharge from the CAF in 2000. Kay then received a medical discharge from the CAF IN 2001.
John’s eldest daughter, Katie Sue Ann Barlett, was born in 1993. She received a Bachelor of Science in Biology from Dalhousie University in 2015 and began working as a Medical Laboratory Assistant for NSHA in 2019. She is currently in her last year of school for Medical Laboratory Technologist and will begin work in March 2025 for NSHA in her new position.
John’s second daughter, Megan Anneliese Bartlett, was born in 1995. She followed in her parents’ footsteps and joined the Canadian Armed Forces Airforce as a Medical Technician in 2014. Megan and her partner Scott gave John and Kay the gift of becoming grandparents with daughter Ellie and son Erich.
John and his family had the privilege of living in a number of different provinces, including Alberta in 1992, New Brunswick in 1997, and finally Nova Scotia in 2002. John will be remembered for his loyalty, his hilarious sense of humour, his generosity, and his love and respect for the CAF.
John is survived by his mother Sylvia “Sue Ann” Barlett (Roger LeBlanc) of Upper Tantallon, NS; loving wife, Kay Barlett; daughters, Katie Bartlett (Richard Talbot) and Megan Bartlett (Scott Hammond); grandchildren, Ellie Hammond and Erich Hammond; and sister, Joanne Goulding of Labrador City, NFLD. John was predeceased by his father, Jack Barlett in 1993.
Arrangements and cremation have been entrusted to J. Albert Walker Funeral Home, 149 Herring Cove Road, Halifax. In keeping with John’s wishes, a Celebration of Life will be held at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 152 (Spryfield Legion) on Dec 18th, 2024 from 2:00pm-4:00pm.
